About Velebit Nature Park

Velebit Nature Park

Velebit Nature Park spans over 200 square kilometers along the central Croatian coast, encompassing the southern part of the Velebit mountain range, one of the most significant and largest Croatian karst regions. The park is characterized by rugged limestone peaks, deep canyons, caves, and a variety of karst formations, including sinkholes and pits. As part of the Dinaric Alps, the park boasts dramatic elevation changes, with the highest peaks reaching over 1,700 meters. Ecologically, Velebit harbors diverse habitats, from Mediterranean vegetation at lower altitudes to subalpine communities higher up, supporting species such as the griffon vulture, chamois, and the endemic Velebit degenia plant. The park also includes important cultural heritage elements, with remnants of shepherding traditions and historic mountain refuges. Key recreation includes hiking, rock climbing, caving, and mountain biking along well-marked trails such as those traversing the Premužić Trail, a renowned path built in the 1930s providing extensive, safe access to the rugged landscape without requiring difficult climbing. The park borders the Northern Velebit National Park to the north, providing a continuum of protected wilderness. Visitors are drawn by scenic overlooks of the Adriatic Sea, opportunities for spotting rare wildlife, and the chance to experience the remote and largely undeveloped mountain environment. The park’s management emphasizes sustainable tourism, ecological research, and preservation of its natural and cultural features.
